Self Care for Acne
The adage 'prevention is better than cure' is very true, especially for pimples. Acne has to be treated in order to avoid ugly blemishes and scars. Also, the bacteria that form pus can affect the internal system as well. Hence, it is absolutely essential to treat pimples. Not only that, treatment has to be started as early as possible.
The most important thing to remember is to start mild treatment as soon as you feel your skin getting oily or when you start getting blackheads/whiteheads. You can follow this general skin care routine.
- Regular gentle cleansing is a must. Use a foaming face wash or 'Cetaphil', which is mildly medicated cleanser, three to four times a day. At bedtime, wash your face throughly with hot water and the face wash, rubbing the lather gently with a soft sponge.
- Avoid harsh, drying anti-acne, soaps and medications.
- Steam your face once a week. Steam loosens the skin's top dried layes and melts the oil clogged up in pores. However, if you have red and pus-filled pimples, you should avoid steaming.
- Do not touch or squeeze acne. Touching/squeezing them not only leaves ugly blemishes but also pushes the infection deeper inside, leaving deeper scars.
- Avoid clogging creams and cosmetics.
- Have a reasonably well-balanced diet, which includes two bowls of vegetables in a day, three or four fruits and two or three cups of skimmed milk or curds. Over and above this, you can have a junk food.
- Exercise regularly. This is extremely important. Exercise is the most effective and natural way of rectifying a hormonal imbalance to some extent. Of course, it also improves your circulation tremendously.
- Avoid sunburn, tanning or sun lamps Many people believes that more exposure to the sun treats acne. But this is definately a misconcept. Sunburn or tanning doesn't treat acne, it just make the acne less visible. These are temporary benifits, while more exposure to the sun increases the chances of rapid skin aging and skin cancer. So if you have acne protect your skin from sunburns by using sunscreens or simply avoid acne.
