It's your fiftieth birthday. Everyone knows what that means, there's no need to draw a diagram. It heralds the imminent arrival of the menopause and all that it entails. It means goodbye to youth and good looks. It's the empty nest syndrome after the children have left home and it often means a husband whose thoughts are wandering elsewhere, even if he hasn't already gone. It's about parents nearing their eighties, growing old as passing away. All in all, it's a nightmare scenario from which none of us is likely to escape unharmed.
Today's fifty-year-old women are very different from those of previous generations. Many of us are still pursuing careers and can count on powerful allies and a whole range of ways and means with which to combat the aging process successfully.

Learning to appreciate and value the passing of time does not mean being passive and resigned. Here you are, at this strange age when some women already look like grannies and others still look almost like young women. Sometimes it's the result of heredity, often of temperament, but always of effort. The aim is not to become young again but to work everyday at keeping yourself as you are now for as long as possible. You are going to have to change your habits and differently manage your spare time, your food, your beauty care, your clothes, your physical exercise and so on.
