Breast Surgery

The passing of time, pregnancies and breastfeeding all take their toll on the breast and the temptation to have tired breasts enlarged or lifted is perfectly understandable. However, before having this done, you must carefully weigh up the pros and the cons.

Different kind of operation

  • Breast impacts
They can increase the size of breasts made too small by shrinkage of the mammary gland (due to the shortage of oestrogen) or a large weight loss. The impacts are silicon envelopes filled with physiological saline that the surgeon inserts through an incision in the crease under the arms (axillary) or under the nipple area (periareolar). They can be placed under or above the pectoral muscle, as required. The entire operation takes around one hour to one hour thirty minutes and you will need to spend 24 hours in hospital.

  • Lifting
Sagging breasts can be lifted by the removal of excess skin. The incision is made just under the nipple area with the possibility of a vertical cut into the mammary fissure. If necessary, implants can also be placed behind the pectoral muscle. The operation takes from two hours to two hours thirty minutes and you will have to spend from 24 to 48 hours in hospital.

What are the risks?
There is a 2% chance of impact rejection. The scar tissue thickens, hardens and presses against the impact. The problem varies from an excessive hardness, which the surgeon can often reduce with massage, to a misshaping of one or both breasts, which requires another operation. In 1% of cases an implant swells and causes one breast to be bigger than the other.

Some Facts

  • After the operation you will need to wear a medical bra for the mouth.
  • The breasts reach their permanent size one month after the operation.
  • When the scars are under the armpit, they will be well concealed.
