Foot Care

Do your feet feel a little tired? Considering all the time they have spent supporting the weight of your body, confined in hoes often too tight and seldom suited to their shape, it is not surprising that they are beginning to protest. It is time to give them a helping hand!

A small problem, but a painful one
Corn, callosity, heloma: just reading theses words makes you want to say, ouch! What is involved in all these cases is a small area of skin with a hard central core, which presses upon the capillaries, often with acutely painful results. These discomforts are the result of the repeated rubbing of a shoe on certain parts of the foot. Corns are usually found on the top part of the toe, under the arch or between the toes. Moisture only makes the situation worse. To get rid of them, do not try self-medication or hacking them about at home - this could cause infections. Go to a chiropodist, who will remove them with a surgeon's knife. To prevent them developing, wear more comfortable shoes; dry your feet very, very carefully, taking care to dry between the toes with the corner of a towel; as often as possible, give your feet a chance to breathe by walking about the house in either sandals or socks, according to the weather.

If you have got an ingrown toenail, act immediately
This problem usually concerns the big toe: it becomes swollen, red around the nail and painful. Go immediately to the chiropodist, who will remove the ingrown part, clean the wound and ensure that the nail grows again without causing any further problems. If you wait too long, you run the risk of having to have real surgery.

Some Facts

  • Far from being a luxury, a monthly visit to the chiropodist will save you a lot of trouble in the future and you will be able to continue to wear sandals in the summer.
  • Without some pretty varnish on your toenails, your feet will never look really smart.
