Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone Replacement Therapy provides the body with the ovaries have stopped producing and so reduces most of the symptoms caused by this shortage of hormones.

Some definite benefits and some possible ones
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can put an end to hot flushes almost instantly; it restores energy, improves mood and reduces insomnia; in 80% of cases it combats loss of bone density and helps to prevent osteoporosis: it relieves joint pains, helps to control weight gain and maintain muscle mass.

In addition, HRT can also prevent Alzheimer's disease as well as improve memory and concentration difficulties.

The disadvantages
HRT can increase the risk of breast cancer. There is also a small definite increase in deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The other disadvantages are less serious: weight gain, water retention (oedema), tension or pain in the breasts (but only if the product is not administered in the right doses); frequent periods.

Remember that you must have breast screening every two years if you present no risk factor or symptoms (pains, lumps etc.). If you are between 50 and 60/65 years old in the UK, for example, there is a nationwide breast-screening program. If you have a strong family history of cancer you should take appropriate advice from your GP, who may refer you to a specialist clinic.
