Leg Care
Smooth, curvy legs, slender thighs and slim knees are youthful assets that should be preserved come what may. When a healthy lifestyle is not enough, medicine and surgery are there to help you.
Prevent circulation problems
Some people inherit spider and varicose veins but many ring them on themselves. Excess weight, lack of exercise and bad eating habit are bound to affect your leg. Therefore, you need to stay slim, take exercise (walking, cycling, swimming), top smoking, drink plenty of water and eat food rich in fibers. Also, don't forget to sleep with your feet elevated, to avoid crossing your legs and to move about often during your working day. And don't rely on medicines that tone up the veins: their effectiveness is questionable.
How to eliminate varicose veins
Problems take the form of red or bluish spider's webs of fine veins and capillaries or swollen, twisted varicose veins. The specialist has various procedures at his/her disposal, depending on the seriousness of the problem.
- Thermocoagulation
It is used to treat spider veins and less serious varicose veins. A nickel needle linked to a high frequency current produces heat, which targets the red and blue blood vessels only without damaging the other tissues.
- Sclerotherapy
A saline solution containing an irritant substance is injected directly into the vein. This is combined with compression bandaging. The aim is to block the vein by causing inflammation in the wall of the vein and a small localized blood clot.
- Copper vapour laser
This is often used in conjunction with sclerotherapy.
- Stripping
This is the most radical method. It involves extracting the whole of the vein through a tiny incision under local and general anesthetic.
Some Facts
- Ginkgo biloba is good for the veins. It is available in pharmacies in the form of gel that is applied by means of gentle massage.
- In women with prominent varicosities, surgery often achieves a god result.
