Move The Body

Our figure sags because of reduction of muscle mass but also because of lack of exercise and our natural tendency to hunch forward, especially when sitting down. These last two aspects need urgent attention.

Work those muscles
Get up earlier and go to work on foot. If it's too far, do half the journey on public transport and the other half on foot. Park some distance from home and walk the rest of the way. Make a habit of climbing the stairs. Use the lunch break for exercise two or three times a week. Go to the gym, swim or jog.
Do whatever is most practical and pleasant. If you live in a town where pollution is not a problem, consider traveling around by bike. Tighten your buttock muscles several times a day and your abdominal all the time. This will help to strengthen them.

Walking is the best medicine
Stride forward, head high, breathing regularly. To keep your hands free and back straight, use a backpack. Take a tip from the women of New York - carry your town shoes in your bag and walk to work in your trainers (sneakers). To get even fitter, wear weighted bands around your ankles and/or wrists.

Stand up straight!
Shoulders hunched, back bent forward, stomach slack: this, unfortunately, is the way most people usually sit at their desks. When you are at work, try as often as you can to keep your back straight and your stomach in. This will strengthen your back and abdominal muscles and in turn make you make you look younger and feel more energetic.

Some Facts

  • Walking non-stop for an hour at average speed will burn off 230 calories.
  • Invest in good shoes - neither too heavy nor too light. The sole should be supple but thick enough to deaden the impact as your foot hits the ground.
