Night Sleeping

When you reach fifty or so, you tend to sleep less and wake up more often. To avoid spending precious time staring anxiously at the ceiling, you are going to need to change your habits and possibly your bedtime.

Seven tips for a good night's sleep:

  • Have a light meal at least two and a half hours before going to bed. Digesting a late meal is likely to disturb your sleep.
  • Open your bedroom window. The air needs to circulate even in winter.
  • Take a bath before going to bed. Pour in some relaxing bath oils.
  • Invest in a good quality bed. Your mattress must be firm but with enough 'give' to accommodate the natural curve of your spine.
  • Scatter a few drops of lavender essential oil on your pillow. It will help you to go to sleep.
  • If daylight penetrates into your bedroom, get used to wearing a mask like those you are given on aero plane.
  • If your partner snores, change bedrooms or buy some earplugs.

The Chinese, masters of the art of furnishing their home according to the principle of harmony between the yin and the yang, have converted the West to Feng Shui. Here are some of its teachings:

  • Don't place your bed between two doors. The energy, which circulates from one to the other, is likely to, metaphorically, cut you in two.
  • Don't put a folding screen around the bed. This could prevent good energy from reaching you.
  • Don't put the bed under a window.
  • Don't put a ceiling light or wall lights above the bed, because electrical circuits after your health while you are sleeping.
  • Take all books out of your bedroom, because this room i reserved for love and rest.


Some Facts

  • Avoid everything that causes worry or excitement in the hour before going to bed. No television in the bedroom, no reading the newspaper, no work o payment of bills.
  • If you wake up before every-one else, get up and take advantage of this moment of freedom. That evening go to bed earlier.
