Think Holistic
The menopause affects the body on different levels, having psychological as well as physical effects. So, it is the ideal time to discover holistic therapies which treat the whole individual.
The holistic approach
The term 'holistic' comes from a Greek word meaning 'whole'. It is used to describe therapies that consider the individual as being equipped with its own system of regulating illness. Unlike traditional western medicines, which is usually only concerned with eliminating a symptom by treating a part of the body, holistic therapies seek t restore balance within the whole individual.
Their purpose, therefore, is to help the body adapt to and compensate for attacks upon it by diseases etc. Homeopathy is the most well known of these therapies but there are others, such as acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, naturopathy, herbal medicine and osteopathy.
Osteopathy, a rapidly developing discipline
The principal tools of the osteopath are his or her hands. They are trained to diagnose bodily imbalances and tensions, and restore the whole being to health. There are two forms of manipulation:
- One that works on the skeleton, the internal and other organs, the circulatory system and the neurological system.
- The other that seeks to re-establish a good flow of energy around the body.
Some Facts
- The osteopath is not merely concerned with curing back pains but also with restoring the whole balance of structure and energy within the individual.
- In some cases a single session is enough but a series of monthly sessions can have a profound effect on your general well-being.
