Weight Control

Many women put on weight at about the age of 50. However, it's not always for the same reason, so the problem needs a personalized answer.

Learn to eat differently
Your metabolism is not what it was. You must accept this and change you eating habits. A reduction in your daily calorie intake doesn't necessarily mean that you have to deprive yourself. It's a matter of reorganizing your meals by getting rid of 'empty calories', which only create fat and do the body no good at all, and replacing them with 'good calories'. You will be able to do this yourself by reading some good books on the subject or you can consult a nutritionist and let him supervise your new approach to eating. Whichever option you choose, whether it's successful or not is entirely up to you. Remember that the key to success is not so much your willpower but your relationship with your body and the amount of pride you take in it.

To be avoided at all costs

  • Miracle diets!
If you lose five kilos (11 lb) in a week, you won't be losing fat but muscle and most of the nutriments essential to your health. And you will put the weight straight back on as soon as you stop dieting.

  • Appetite suppressants!
Almost all of them have a base of thyroid hormones, diuretics, amphetamines and tranquillizers. It's true they make you thinner but at the expense of your muscles, whilst your fat is hardly affected. What is more, you run a serious risk of suffering from kidney and thyroid disorders, anxiety attacks, insomnia and more.

Some Facts

  • It is normal to weigh more at 50 than you did at 20. You should try to accept this and remember that being excessively thin ages you just as much.
  • Regular exercise will help you to control your weight.
