Fuller's Earth Clay Mask

Fuller's Earth is also called multani mitti. It is formed by the decomposition of volcanic ash. It makes a great cleansing mask, and possesses absorbent qualities. It is rich in minerals. When applied to the skin in the form of a paste, it helps improve circulation; it hardens slowly as it dries and absorbing the dead cells on the top of the skin and dries up any excess oil. The mineral ingredient in fuller's earth is hydrated aluminium silicate, which gives the absorbent action. Oil of the skin coats the particles of aluminium silicate and is lifted away from the skin when the mask is removed. It may be inappropriate for someone who has dry skin but is excellent for oily skin.

Fuller's earth is also a normal way to remove impurities without stripping the skin of its natural moisturizers. The clay absorbs bacteria and toxins and reduces water loss. It is used to lessen arthritic pain and strengthen fingernails, teeth, gums and hair, because of its high mineral content. It has even been used as an urgent treatment for individuals who have ingested a harmful substance, in order to decrease the amount of poison absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract.

Mud in general can help take the pain out of burns and bee stings (bears roll around in it when they are stung), and when wet clay dries on the skin, it can draw out heat and reduces inflammation. Spiritually, a mudpack can help ground you. Healers suggest a mudpack in preparation of rituals and spells of prosperity and healing.

Fullers' earth -This sedimentary clay has vast drawing capabilities and is the number one choice for oily skin and those prone to acne. It draws oil from the skin and has been widely used for this purpose. It is a great cleanser as it removes dead skin cells. It is good for oily or normal skin.

How to make Fuller's earth mask

Ingredients:
Multani mitti – 2 tablespoon
Rose water – 1 tablespoon

Method: Mix the two ingredients to form a smooth paste. Apply it on the skin leaving the area around the eyes. Leave it on for about 15-20 minutes or until completely dry. Rinse off with warm or normal water.

The result is clear pinkish skin. The tinge is due to the stepping up of blood circulation and all the excess grease and dead cells are cleared away. For individuals with perspiration problem, Fuller's earth mixed with talc powder makes a very good foot powder. It can be sprinkled into the shoes or rubbed directly on the feet.

Other methods-

  • Take a tablespoon of curd or lemon juice; mix it with fuller's earth. Keep it for half an hour and then blend well. Apply it on your face and keep the pack for 15 minutes. When dry, wash off with lukewarm water followed by a cold-water rinse. This is an ideal mask for oily skin.
  • If you have patchy skin, make the following face pack. Take a tablespoon each of curd and fuller's earth each. Add a teaspoon of mint powder. Soak fuller's earth in curd for half an hour, then mix mint in it. Apply the paste on the face. Leave it to dry and wash off with lukewarm water followed by a cold-water rinse.
  • To remove pimple marks, grind two or three neem leaves into a paste and mix with a tablespoon of fuller's earth soaked in water. Apply this to clean skin and let it dry completely before washing it off. Do this daily for 15 days.
  • Mix together one fourth cup of fuller's earth, one fourth cup dried orange peel and two tablespoons full of oatmeal powder. Take a spoon full of this mixture, add some water to make a paste and apply it all over the face and neck. Work the paste gently on the skin in a circular motion. Concentrate on the nose and chin area. Wash off with water. This scrub deep cleans oily skin and helps unclog pores.
  • Make a whole body mudpack with five tablespoons of fuller's earth, a cup of fresh apple juice, a tablespoon each of lemon juice and honey, two tablespoons of almond oil and six drops of sandalwood essential oil. Mix the fuller's earth with apple and lemon juice until it forms a smooth paste. Stir in the almond oil, honey and essential oil. To use, apply small amounts of the mixture to the body. Start at the feet and work up. Concentrate on areas of dull skin. Gently massage the mixture into the skin and leave for a few minutes to dry before getting into the shower. Use warm water to rinse off all traces of the mudpack and then shower.
