Causes of Dry Skin

Many people use vitamins for treating dry skin, but this treatment will only work if the cause of the dry skin is the vitamin deficiency.

In most cases, people develop dry skin on face not due to any nutritional deficiency, but because of the chemicals in the skin products that they use. The reasons can also be exposure to an unclean environment, or dehydration. Obviously, if one of these factors is the cause of dry facial skin, the only way to solve the problem is by addressing these factors, intake of vitamin supplements will not help. If you are sure that these factors are not the reason of your dry skin, you can try taking vitamin supplements for a few weeks.

The best way to combat dry skin is to avoid factors mentioned below that cause dryness:

  • Avoid excessive washing or bathing, as hot water particularly tends to remove the natural oils secreted by the skin.
  • Always use mild, good quality soap, as the soap you use can also be a cause. Harsh, cheap soaps can cause dryness even if you take shower once or twice a day.
  • Factors such as climate or air conditioning can also cause dryness, but these factors are usually beyond our control. If you work in an office, it is generally not possible to avoid an environment that is air conditioned or centrally heated.
  • Winter is another factor, which tends to dry the skin out, and the only thing to do in such cases is take appropriate counter measures. This can be done by using a moisturizing cream or lotion for dry skin daily, perhaps several times a day. The moisturizer should be applied immediately after bathing when the skin is still moist and the moisturizer can help the skin retain this moisture. In case of an extremely dry skin a thick, rich moisturizer is necessary.

If you still have dry skin, even after taking these measures, then you can try using some vitamins.

One vitamin for dry skin is Vitamin E, which is used to treat a variety of skin problems. Vitamin E oil is easily available in the market. You should apply a small amount of vitamin oil daily on your skin. Vitamin A also helps in keeping the skin moist and supple, so you should try Vitamin A supplements. For better results, eat foods that are rich in Vitamin A, such as cabbage, carrots, and pumpkin, as vitamins for dry skin are best obtained from natural sources.
