Herbs are the best substitute for skin care. The manufacturers have recently added herbs to their skin care products, from cleansers to moisturizers and everything in between. Still, those who have not tried them are yet concerned about their effectiveness. For those who are doubtful, here are the facts about herbal skin care's benefits.
Using Herbs in Skin Care
- Calendula and comfrey have skin-softening properties. They are used in the preparation of facial sauna or to make herbal or floral waters. Due to its astringent and detoxifying properties, they are used for skin care.
- Tea tree oil is known to absorb into the skin's cellular level. Add one drop of oil to your preferred day or night cream to help moisturize and smooth skin. Blonde-haired people can use tea tree oil as a hair rinse, which adds shine to the hair. Tea tree oil is used in ointments, creams, compresses and toners for wounds, skin rejuvenation, skin infections, and inflammatory skin conditions. Also used in lotions and creams as a compress, for oily skin, it is supposed to be cleansing, clarifying and emollient and soothes sensitive skins.
- Borage, fennel, coltsfoot or calendula tea also helps enhance the skin. Add one tsp. of any of these herbs to one cup of boiling water and drink daily. A facial sauna can be prepared by using the herbs chamomile, lavender, and peppermint, which is good for dry skin.
- Yarrow is known for its astringent, remedial and soothing effects on the skin and hair. It strengthens the skin tone.
- Melt the lanolin in a small bowl over a pan of hot water. Add the sunflower and almond oils and beat together. Take away from the heat and carry on beating as the mixture thickens then stir in the oil of lavender. Pour into a sterile pan and screw on the lid when the cream is cold. This is a rich moisturizing night cream for dry skin. This cream is soothing and fragrant. Both almond and sunflower oil comprise a moisturizing, softening action on the skin. Almond oil also has a reputation as a cleanser. The lavender oil is soothing.
- Astragalus treats disorders of the skin including burns. It also has been used for the treatment of skin tumors. For topical use, mix the powder with sesame oil and apply.
- Holy basil contains ursolic acid and is one of the latest favorites in the cosmetic industries because it not only quickly heals the skin but it also enhances elasticity and removes wrinkles. It also shows benefits for preventing skin cancer. A cream made from the herb is used topically for its antifungal and antibacterial actions.
- The fruits and leaves of Raspberry are very useful for skin. They possess the astringent and stimulant properties; can be used as a wash for wounds and external skin ulcers.
