Steps to Soothe Your Sunburn

Sunburn is the most common form of radiation burn, caused by radiant energy; the energy that radiates from its source. It is a burn caused by overexposure to the sun. Some medication can make a person more prone to sunburn. Most sunburn is superficial, but in severe cases, the skin may be blistered.

Sunburn is a burn, so your body is trying hard to heal right now, which takes a lot of energy. It is usually uncomfortable for 24 to 48 hours. With drinking, a lot of water, maybe taking a painkiller or aloe vera can help if it is bad. If you have sunburn, stay out of the sun until your skin recovers, and try these steps to soothe your sunburn:

  1. The proteins in milk give skin a protective coat that prevents water evaporation. The skin needs moisture for the healing enzymes to work properly. These will soothe skin and take the sting away.
  2. Take ibuprofen (400 mg every four hours) until the redness goes away. This anti-inflammatory can reduce the swelling of a sprained ankle; it can reduce the inflammation of burned skin.
  3. You can also begin drinking green tea or pomegranate extract or juice. Both have soothing anti-inflammatory benefits, better yet; they are both strong antioxidants, which mean that they can help lessen some of the unseen damage that UV exposure is doing to your sunburned skin.
  4. In fact, you cannot get too many antioxidants, particularly when skin has taken a UV beating. Be sure to consume three servings of fruits and veggies every day (particularly antioxidant powerhouses like berries) to prevent damage.
  5. Topical antioxidants are another important healing tool. For your face, try antioxidant-rich moisturizers like Topix Replenix Cream CF, Revale Skin
  6. Coffeeberry Day Cream, Eucerin Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Sensitive Skin Lotion, or Aveeno Ultra-Calming facial moisturizers. More and more body moisturizers, such as Nivea Body Skin-Firming Lotion and Topix Citrix Body Lotion, also include antioxidants.
  7. Use a current product with aloe, an anti-inflammatory standby, to soothe and cool sunburned skin.
  8. When your skin begins to peel, moisturize at least three times a day.
  9. As tempting as it can be, do not pull off flaking skin, it can worsen the peeling. Let it fall off naturally.
  10. Also, do not exfoliate or use glycolic acid, retinoid, or salicylic acid until all peeling has stopped. Your skin is too delicate during the peeling phase to use these ingredients, which accelerate cell turnover.
  11. The most important thing you can do, of course, is make sure that you never get sunburn again. So pick up a good broad-spectrum sunscreen like
Neutrogena Dry-Touch Sun block or Aveeno Continuous Protection Sun block that blocks both UVA and UVB, which are the two types of ultraviolet light that can damage skin. Do not forget to reapply - sunscreen is not a once-a-day proposition. You will need to slather it on every hour that you are in direct sunlight, or after swimming or sweating heavily.
