Treatment for Skin Fungus
Ringworm Treatment
There are two ways to treat ringworm with external applications or with oral medications.
- External Applications (Topically): Many antifungal creams available in market can clear the condition in two weeks or so. Preparations for such solution includes those that contain
- clotrimazole (Cruex cream, Desenex cream, Lotromin cream, lotion, and solution, and Lotrisone cream),
- miconazole (Monistat-Derm cream and Lotrimin cream, powder, and spray),
- ketoconazole (Nizoral cream and shampoo),
- and terbinafine (Lamisil cream and solution).
- Oral Medications (Systemically):
Oral medications are necessary when some fungal infections do not respond well to topical treatments.
For a long time, the antifungal tablet griseofulvin (Fulvicin, Grifulvin, and Gris-PEG) was used. But in recent years, a new medicine that includes terbinafine (Lamisil), itraconazole (Sporanox), and fluconazole (Diflucan) is being used.
Some people fear that these newer agents are bad for the liver, but they are quite safe when used properly.
Athlete's foot Treatment
Athlete's foot can be treated in two ways.
- Don't allow the fungus to grow more by keeping the area clean and dry. Use toe-opened footwear as possible having breatheble material. Use antifungal treatments such as with miconazole or tolnaftate. It will help you to keep your feet dry. At last, soak your feet in a drying solution of aluminum acetate (Burrow's solution or Domeboro's solution).
- Many antifungal creams are available such as miconazole, clotrimazole, etc. It will take 4 weeks.
Jock Itch Treatment
Jock itch is treated best topically. The antifungals available are tolnaftate (Tinactin), clotrimazole (Lotrimin), and miconazole (Micatin). It should be applied twice a day for at least two weeks.
Candida Treatment Candidiasis is treated either with home remedies or with prescription antifungal medications.
Home remedies: It includes the consumption or direct application of yogurt, which contains lactobacillus, acidophilus tablets or salves, and even lightly crushed cloves of garlic, which yield allicin, an antifungal. Boric acid is also used to trear candida. While home remedies helps only in minor cases of infection.
Another solution for candida is antifungal drugs such as topical clotrimazole, topical nystatin, fluconazole, topical ketoconazole. While in severe infections caspofungin, amphotericin B, or voriconazole may be used.
