  • If you have a family history of melanoma, examine your skin monthly, and at least every three months.
  • Check areas that aren't exposed to sunlight, including armpits, your scalp, feet - the soles and between the toes, genital area and, if you're a woman, the skin underneath your breasts.
  • To check your back properly, you can use a hand-held mirror along with a wall mirror.
  • People with dysplastic nevi are at greater risk of developing malignant melanoma and need to be checked it from dermatologist.
  • You can self-examine your skin with the help of A-B-C-D skin self-examination guide, adapted from the American Academy of Dermatology:
    • A: It is for Asymmetrical shape. Check for moles with irregular shapes, such as two very different-looking halves.
    • B: It is for irregular Border. Check for moles with irregular, notched or scalloped borders, which are the characteristics of melanomas.
    • C: It is for changes in Color. Check for growths that have many colors or an uneven distribution of color.
    • D: It is for Diameter. Check for growths that are larger than about 1/4 inch (6 millimeters).
