Prevention of skin moles
- Become familiar with the location and pattern of your moles.
- If you have a family history of melanoma, examine your skin monthly, and at least every three months.
- Check areas that aren't exposed to sunlight, including armpits, your scalp, feet - the soles and between the toes, genital area and, if you're a woman, the skin underneath your breasts.
- To check your back properly, you can use a hand-held mirror along with a wall mirror.
- People with dysplastic nevi are at greater risk of developing malignant melanoma and need to be checked it from dermatologist.
- You can self-examine your skin with the help of A-B-C-D skin self-examination guide, adapted from the American Academy of Dermatology:
- A: It is for Asymmetrical shape. Check for moles with irregular shapes, such as two very different-looking halves.
- B: It is for irregular Border. Check for moles with irregular, notched or scalloped borders, which are the characteristics of melanomas.
- C: It is for changes in Color. Check for growths that have many colors or an uneven distribution of color.
- D: It is for Diameter. Check for growths that are larger than about 1/4 inch (6 millimeters).
