Childhood Skin Rashes

  • Diaper Rash: It occurs due to dampness and the interaction of urine and the skin. A rash appears in small patches or rough skin, and tiny pimples.

  • Hives: Hives appears due to allergic reaction with food, viral infection, insect bites, drug or other substances. A rash appears as raised red bumps with pale centers like a mosquito bites, and its shape, size and location can change rapidly.

  • Chicken Pox: Chicken Pox causes due to the infection of varicella/herpes zoster virus. The rash appears as a flat red spots that become raised resembling small pimples. It develops into small blisters that break and crust over.

  • Impetigo: Impetigo also caused by bacterial infection. It appears as pus-filled blisters, and red skin in infants and golden crusts on red sores in older children.

  • Scarlet Fever: A streptococcal bacterial infection causes scarlet fever leading a rough, bright red rash.

  • Fifth Disease: It causes due to human parvovirus B19 and a rash appears as a red of varying shades that fade to a flat, lacy pattern.

  • Eczema: It causes due to allergens. Dry, red, cracked skin, blisters that ooze and crust over.

  • Heat Rash (Prickly Heat): A rash appears as small red pimples, pink blotchy skin. It happens due to blocking off sweat glands.

  • Cradle Cap: Caused by hormones that pass through the placenta before birth. A scaly, crusty rash appears in newborns.

  • Posion Ivy, Oak, Sumac: It is caused by the interaction of oily resins of plant leaves with skin. A rash appears as red, swollen skin with lines of tiny blisters.

  • Roseola: Roseola occures due to herpes virus type-6, a flat, rosy red rash appears.

  • Lyme Disease: A red rash with raised edges surrounding the tick bite and pale centers in the middle caused due to deer tick bite.
